Walk-in tutoring

We offer free one-on-one walk-in tutoring for all undergraduate UMBC students, as well as appointment and limited walk-in tutoring for graduate students. We can tutor papers from any discipline, so if you need help with any paper, be sure to stop by!

Location:
UMBC's Albert O. Kuhn Library's basement
(Go through the main entrance, turn right after passing through the security gate, go down the stairs to the basement, turn left or right, and walk around to the back.)

Hours:
Monday-Wednesday 10:00AM-7:00PM
Thursday 10:00AM-5:00PM
Friday 10:00AM-2:00PM

What to bring

We can also tutor your paper on the computer if you have not printed it out, but this tends to be a little more difficult. If you do want to be tutored on the computer, be sure to bring the disk that has your essay on it!

Make sure you allow enough time to revise your paper (try not to come in the day it's due)!

What to expect

  • Most sessions take about 45 minutes to complete, so plan your time accordingly
  • You will be signed into our computer system (this helps us keep track of what types of people use our Center the most and for what classes; this information will not be shared with anyone
  • Expect to read your paper OUT LOUD, since this will help you identify errors in your paper (if this idea makes you nervous, you don't have to do it; it is strongly advised, though)
  • The tutor will most likely make very few marks on your paper--expect to be writing a lot!
  • At the end of the session, a memo will be sent to your professor to let him or her know that you took the extra effort to visit the Center. Please let the tutor know if you do not want the memo sent.
  • Do NOT expect the tutor to just correct your paper! We are a learning resource, not a proofreading service, so expect to do your own work!

Tutoring for graduate students
Graduate students can use the same walk-in service that undergraduate students use, but we do provide special appointment tutoring as well:
